April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. It causes a whopping 1.6 million accidents per year. It is by far one of the fastest growing issues on the road today. Friend of the show Attorney David Ratz from Huffman & Huffman joined us to explain more.
Although there are many things that can cause a driver to become distracted, the biggest issue on the road is phones! Texting and talking on the phone have become problematic because it takes a split second for circumstances to change and for an accident to occur.
Playing with the radio, eating, putting on makeup, or even having kids in the car can also cause a driver to be distracted and get into an accident.
When talking about age groups and car accidents, drivers under the age of 20 are the most likely to be involved in a distracted driving crash. The same age group has the largest number of fatalities due to distracted driving.
While overall the largest distracted driving issue is cellphones, that isn’t the case for teens. For teenagers, the biggest distraction is having their friends riding in the vehicle with them! There are laws in place to try and mitigate this risk.
If you are involved in any kind of accident and are injured, make sure you call Huffman & Huffman.
