Building Resilience and Why It’s Important to Your Health

Resilience…it’s the mental reservoir of strength that people are able to call on in times of need to carry them through tough times. Psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy and significant sources of stress. As much as resilience involves “bouncing back” from these difficult experiences, it can also involve profound personal growth.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Christopher Anderson from the Crisis Response Network to talk more in depth about resilience, and how it applies to anyone struggling with the impact of the pandemic.

Crisis Response Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals by inspiring hope, has been providing crisis call center services since 2007 and in that short time has helped thousands of individuals and families get connected to the help they need.

Studies show that some people are born with resilience, but it’s also something you can learn. Many local hospitals teach classes on resilience building, so if you’re interested in learning some techniques, reach out to your local hospital or wellness center to inquire on options available in your area.

A Positive Outlook Makes a Difference

Did you know coping with stress in a positive way (aka resilience) has many health benefits? It’s associated with longevity, lower rates of depression and satisfaction with life. Looking for ways to try and keep a positive outlook is beneficial to your mind, and body.

One thing that usually always lifts my spirits is heading outdoors, and although our summer gatherings with friends and family look different right now, there are creative ways to mix things up. Here are a few ideas to incorporate fun (and flavor) to your family’s cookout menu…from my backyard, to yours!

Speaking of trying new things and keeping a positive attitude, as a parent it can be a challenge finding fun activities to do with your kids at home (outside of their online school schedule, of course!) Remember friends, how we view adversity and stress strongly affects how we succeed, and this is one of the most significant reasons that having a resilient mindset is so important. Making mistakes and failing is an inevitable part of living, we know this. Being resilient means that when we do fail, we have the strength to learn the lessons we need to learn, and we can move on to bigger and better things.

Like I always say, our ‘setbacks’ are really a SETUP for great things ahead!
