Patricia and Quincy both have their motorcycle licenses! As the weather is getting nicer- we will see more and more motorcycles on the roads. As May is motorcycle safety awareness month, we invited our friends from Huffman and Huffman on the show to talk to us about motorcycle safety!
Motorcycle Safety Awareness
Attorney David Ratz from Huffman and Huffman educates us on the topic. He explains that it is of utmost importance to use extra caution when driving a car and sharing the roads with motorcyclists. Motorcyclists are overrepresented when it comes to both crashes and fatalities out on the road.
One of the main reasons for this is that motorcycles don’t have everything a car has- most importantly, an outer body to protect passengers. Motorcycles also lack all of the safety features which cars have.
Preventative Steps for Drivers
As someone driving a car- the first step to being safe is continuously scanning the roadway and being aware of your surroundings. It is also really important to not drive while distracted!! Some other ways to stay more safe:
- Use caution when turning left
- Leave room in between your car and the rider in front of you
- Check your mirrors often
- Remember you’re sharing the road with riders just like you are with drivers in other cars!
Preventative Steps for Riders
As a rider, some things you can do to be more safe are:
- Take a defensive driving course
- Wear appropriate gear
- Obey all traffic laws
- Make sure your motorcycle is in good working condition
- Be aware of any potential hazards around you
