It’s a Select semifinal matchup on Yurview on Friday, as one-loss Catholic New Iberia takes on undefeated Isidore Newman for a chance to play for a Division III State Championship at the Superdome.

How They Got Here
Catholic New Iberia, the #3 seed beat #6 Calvary Baptist Academy 49-28 to advance last week. The Panthers rode their lead back, JaDan Stokes, early and often as they took an early lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Stokes had three total touchdowns, including two in the first quarter, one a 58-yard scamper on Catholic’s first series and the other a 75-yard catch and run. Stokes finished with over 250 yards from scrimmage.

Newman beat St. Thomas Aquinas in their quarterfinal matchup, 37-7. The Greenies also jumped out to an early lead, thanks to first quarter touchdowns by Murray Calhoun and Dylan Hill. They took a 20-7 lead to the half, and a big defensive stand late in the thirst quarter thwarted any designs STA had on a comeback.

Looking for Revenge
This semifinal matchup is a rematch from the 2016 LHSAA playoffs, as last season CHNI was the #4 seed and Newman was the #12 seed. The Panthers won that one 49-21, before falling to top-seed Riverside in the semifinals. Certainly Newman will remember getting run on by Stokes and company in that 2016 matchup, and will look to keep him in check. On the other side of the field, Catholic New Iberia will try to get to the Superdome after coming within one game of that goal last season.

A multiple year starter, he’ll be hungry as a senior after getting knocked out of last year’s semifinal in the first quarter. He ran for 19 scores this season.

He gets the ball to his playmakers and can run it a little himself.

If he keeps it, and can outrun even defensive backs.
