Catholic New Iberia Defeats Isidore Newman to Advance to Title Game

Catholic New Iberia Crushes Isidore Newman 49-7 to advance to the Division III State Championship.

In a semifinal rematch, the 10-1 Catholic New Iberia Panthers took on the undefeated Isidore Newman Greenies for the ticket to the Superdome. Catholic running back Ben Landry secured the first score of the game with 4:53 left in the first quarter. Shortly after, with a minute left in the quarter, Newman quarterback Martin Butcher surpassed the record set by Peyton Manning in 1993. In the second quarter, the Panthers were a force to reckon with. They scored four consecutive touchdowns to end the first half with a score of 35-0. At the half, Catholic had 117 rushing yards; Newman had gained 79. Catholic led Newman in yardage again in passing, with 230 to Newman’s 91. Though Newman managed to gain more first downs, they were unable to break through the intense Catholic defensive line.

In the third quarter, Catholic struck again with a touchdown with 9:55 left. Newman wide reciever and free safety Jarmone Sutherland answered with a run for the first and only Greenie touchdown, bringing the score to 42-7 with 5:33 left. Following the Newman touchdown, the Panthers scored again, bringing the game score to 9-7, where it would remain the rest of the game.

The Panthers advance to the Division III State Championship for the second time in four seasons, as the Greenies’ season comes to a close.

Highlights

In the second quarter, Catholic New Iberia running back Trey Henry doubled their lead over Newman with a 96 yard touchdown run. Additionally, Catholic running back JaDan Stokes ran in two more touchdowns, solidifying the Panther’s 35-0 halftime lead.

Player of the Game

Following his 96 yard touchdown run, Catholic new Iberia’s Trey Henry ran in a second of their six touchdowns. This second touchdown brought the Panthers to a four touchdown lead over the Greenies.
