1st and 10

As the high school football season continues, each game becomes even more important for the top teams in the country. And huge matchups continue to populate the schedule.

Here’s a look at 10 of the top headlines entering another week of the high school football season, with a full slate of games scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 27-29.

1. Mater Dei knocks off IMG

It was a battle of national powerhouses this past Friday when IMG Academy (Fla.) traveled to take on Mater Dei (Calif.). IMG Academy entered the matchup with the No. 1 ranking in the USA Today Super 25 poll. However, it didn’t leave with it.

Mater Dei took down IMG Academy, 28-24, to ascend to the top spot in the Super 25 rankings.

Mater Dei quarterback Bryce Young, a 5-star recruit (per the 247sports composite rankings) who is committed to USC, scored a go-ahead touchdown run with just more than a minute to go to lift his team to the huge victory.

2. Mashburn reuniting with older brother

Cole Mashburn, a safety for Norman North (Okla.), will be joining his brother at the college level soon. And the two may have a chance to play on the field together again.

Mashburn committed to Memphis on Sept. 22. The 3-star recruit (per the 247sports composite rankings) will join his older brother, Cade, who is a redshirt freshman linebacker for the Tigers.

Mashburn chose the Tigers over offers from several other schools, including Iowa State, Nevada, North Texas and Texas State.

3. New Jersey quarterback sets state record

Nick Kargman is no stranger to breaking records, and he did it again this past Saturday.

Kargman led Woodrow Wilson (N.J.) to a 59-37 win over Cedar Creek (N.J.) by throwing for a New Jersey-record 539 yards. The previous record of 536 was set by Timber Creek’s Danny Williams in 2013.

It’s not the first record that Kargman broke this season. Earlier this year, he threw eight touchdown passes, a South Jersey record, in a win over Camden Catholic (N.J.) on Sept. 8.

4. Boone does it all for Union

This past Friday, Union (Okla.) notched a 21-0 win over Owasso (Okla.). And a main reason why Union earned the victory was the performance of senior running back Darius Boone Jr.

Boone, a 3-star recruit (per the 247sports composite rankings) who is committed to Eastern Michigan, rushed for 315 yards and scored all three of Union’s touchdowns to lead it to victory.

Union improved to 2-2 with the huge win.

5. Top recruit taking official visits

Kayvon Thibodeaux (Oaks Christian School, Thousand Oaks, Calif.) is the No. 1 overall player in the 247sports composite rankings. But the elite defensive end hasn’t yet made a college decision.

However, Thibodeaux should be getting closer to making a decision in the coming months, as he is currently in the process of taking his official visits.

This past Saturday, Thibodeaux visited Alabama. He previously visited Florida State on Sept. 3.

Thibodeaux has several other visits coming up soon, including Florida (Oct. 6) and Oregon (Oct. 13).

6. Matchup to watch: University Lab vs. Zachary

University Lab (La.) has been impressive while getting off to a 4-0 start this season. And it’ll look to continue its early success this Friday.

The Cubs will look for their fifth consecutive win when they travel to take on Zachary (La.), which has opened the season at 3-1.

Zachary’s lone loss this season came against Catholic-B.R. (La.) on Sept. 7, when it fell, 31-30. University Lab beat Catholic B.R., 41-21, on Sept. 14.

8. Incredible Play of the Week

In the fourth quarter, McCammon scored a 54-yard touchdown run on a play that involved evading many defenders, breaking several tackles and sprinting down the left sideline.

9. Top Performance of the Week
