Big Playoff Implications for This Week’s GameTime Match-Ups (Oct. 19-20)

Only a couple weeks left in the regular season, and this week’s GameTime schedule has lots of playoff implications.  The national game on Thursday, October 19th is a big Oklahoma 6A-II Match-Up – Sand Springs vs. Booker T. Washington.

Regional games on Friday, October 20th include Oklahoma #2 ranked Owasso vs. Norman North, Skyline vs. Red Mountain (Arizona), Central vs. Zachary (Louisiana), and a Nebraska A district #1 showdown – Omaha Burke vs. Bellevue West.

Here’s an overview of this week’s games:

Sand Springs vs. Booker T. Washington (Oklahoma)

When:  Thursday, October 19 – 7:00pm CT (times/channels vary across regions – check local listings)

Overview:  Game preview HERE.  Booker T. Washington comes into game with an impressive 6-1 record and is undefeated/tied for lead in 6A-II District 2 standings.  Sand Springs 4-3 (2-1) needs a big win to remain in playoff contention. Washington will try to avoid looking past the Sandites with a much-anticipated district title showdown coming up at Bixby.

Why the Hornets will win: They are an offensive juggernaut, averaging 57.8 points over their last four games.  Why the Sandites could win:  They have 6A-II’s leading rusher — Payton Scott, who has 1,639 yards and 21 TDs.

Owasso vs. Norman North (Oklahoma)

When:  Friday, October 20 – 7:00pm CT

Overview:  The #2 ranked team in Oklahoma, Owasso Rams (6-1) travel to take on the Norman North Timberwolves (5-2).  Both teams come into the game with 3-1 records in 6A-I District 2 and hope to stay close to top-ranked Union.  Owasso Jr. QB Will Kuehne has over 1500 yards passing for the season and a talented defensive secondary led by Josh Proctor (Ohio State commit) and Wayne Jones (Kansas State commit).

For Norman North, Sr. QB Ryan Peoples has thrown for over 1800 yards and rushed for over 400 yards.  Issac and Drake Stoops (son’s of former OU coach Bob Stoops) lead the team in receiving yards with over 1300 yards between them.

Skyline vs. Red Mountain (Arizona)

When:  Friday, October 20 – 7:00pm MST/9:00pm CT

Overview:  Game preview HERE.  This big Mesa city match-up  will probably decide the East Valley section champion.  Both teams are 3-0 in section play. Skyline (5-3) is ranked #11 in the Arizona power rankings and Red Mountain (6-2) is ranked #8.

Skyline has become a force under head coach Angelo Paffumi, winning 37 games in the past 3 and a half seasons. For the Coyotes, RB Aaron Woodhas has emerged as a star with 1,100 yds/14 TDs on the ground this season. The Coyotes defense is led by senior DB Darius Glover and DE Aaron Romero.

After a coaching change and two early season loses, Red Mountain has reeled off six straight wins.  Lance Lawson is the man who makes Red Mountain go on both sides of the ball.  He plays multiple positions including QB, RB, WR, and DB. Lawson has college offers from Arizona and Montana.  The Mountain Lions are led by a ferocious defense that has 32 sacks on the season, 10 interceptions and 9 fumble recoveries.

Central vs. Zachary (Louisiana)

Overview:  Important Louisiana 5A-4 district matchup.  Central (4-4) is 3-1 and Zachary (5-2) is 3-0 in district play.

Central Wildcats young offence is led by sophomore QB Sam Kenerson and WRs Destin Franklin and Le’dderick Thomas.  On defense the Wildcats are anchored by LB’s Drew Lassiegne and Keenan Leachman, DE Jeff Campbell and S Hunter Arnold.

The Zachary Bronos, ranked #5 in the Baton Rouge area, are led by sophomore QB Keilon Brown, who threw for 5 TDs in week 6 and WR’s Chandler Whitfield and Arizona St./Kansas recruit Trea Shropshire. The offensive line is anchored by Houston and Maryland recruit Blake Anderson, LB Rodaren Alexander, D-Lineman Ralph Holmes and Caleb Jackson.

Omaha Burke vs. Bellevue West (Nebraska)

When:  Friday, October 20 – 7:00pm CT

Overview:  This is a monster game. Both teams are 7-1 and seperated by one game in A-1 District play.  Burke’s only loss is to undefeated #1 Omaha North 49-28. Bellevue West is yet to lose, after taking home the state title last season. Bellevue west won a 45-41 thriller over Burke last season, in which the two teams combined for 1179 yards of total offense.

Players to watch: Burke- RB James Burks has already rushed for over 1000 yards this season. Others- TE/DE Chris Hickman (offers from Iowa St, Nebraska, Ole Miss) and LB Nick Henrich (offers from Iowa, Iowa St., Minnesota, Nebraska, Kentucky)

Bellevue West – Sophomore RB Jevyon Ducker has nearly 1200 yards rushing and 20 TDs on the season. Others- QB Joe Dolincheck (34 TD’s and 7 TD passes in back-to-back games this season) and WR Zavier Betts.
