We all love those quaint, Christmasy towns we see in holiday movies. So be honest—how often have we sat curled up in front of the television with our hot chocolate dreaming of stepping into that perfect little Christmas community?
Well, dream no more. Your perfect little Christmas town awaits about an hour and a half drive from the hustle and bustle of Phoenix. Welcome to the historic City of Prescott known as “Arizona’s Christmas City.”
Prescott is beautiful year-round, but at Christmas, it literally glows with holiday cheer and charm. And you don’t have to wait much longer for this former gold mining town to transform itself into a holiday wonderland. The Christmas magic officially begins on Saturday, December 2 with the City of Prescott’s 35th Annual Christmas Parade and its 63rd Annual Courthouse Lighting.
The 35th Annual Christmas Parade runs from 1:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon marching through downtown Prescott. The theme for this year’s parade is: “A Cowboy Christmas.” The holiday parade will feature 80 entries including high school bands from around the state and, of course, it wouldn’t be a Christmas parade without an appearance from Santa Claus.
After the parade, head over to historic Whiskey Row. Enjoy a late lunch at one of Prescott’s many legendary saloons, like The Palace Saloon, which has been around since 1877. In addition to saloons and other restaurants, Whiskey Row is full of eclectic shops and art galleries. This is the perfect place to find those unique and special Christmas gifts for family and friends.
As evening approaches, walk over to the Courthouse Plaza for the 63rd Annual Courthouse Lighting, which begins at 6 p.m. Get there earlier, at 5:00 p.m., to enjoy live holiday music, and a local choral group will gather on the Courthouse Plaza steps to sing right before the lights are switched on to reveal a dazzling and wondrous display.
While the parade and lighting are the official kick off to the holidays in “Arizona’s Christmas City,” fun and festive activities continue throughout the month of December. Check out the Events Calendar on the City of Prescott Arizona website for a complete listing of all their holiday happenings, and take a trip to this amazing Arizona City.
