Matchup of Juggernauts

Centennial won the 5A Conference state title a year ago, along they way they were able to topple another out of state juggernaut, upsettingย nationally ranked St. Thomas Aquinas en route to the championship.

Meanwhile, Bishop Gorman went 13-2 and captured their a 9th consecutive title in Nevada. They came into this season ranked 11th in the USA Today Super 25 with high expectations of challenging for another national championship.

In its last matchup versus a team from The Grand Canyon State, Bishop Gorman knocked off Chandler in the 2015 season opener.

Can Bishop Gorman Bounce Back?

Having lost just twice over the last four seasons, Bishop Gorman isn’t used to coming up short on the scoreboard, but the Nevada powerhouse certainly took one of the chin in the 2018 opener. Against Mater Dei (California), who is the No. 2 ranked team in the country, Bishop Gorman lost, 42-0, suffering its first shutout defeat in 12 years.

Bishop Gorman had its chances to be competitive. Mater Dei came up with a key stop on fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line to keep its two-touchdown lead in the second quarter. After that, Bishop Gorman chased the game, going for every fourth down opportunity, and in some instances, it set up the Mater Dei offense with great field position.

Players to Watch

CB Kieran Clark – Centennial

Ranked as theย No. 44 recruit in Arizona, Clark will lead the Centennial defense, which recorded five shutouts in 2017. The senior cornerback has received offers from Hawaii, Wyoming and Nevada.

RB Tawee Walker – Centennial

The transfer from Mojave High School in Las Vegas never had the chance to face Bishop Gorman in Nevada but he certainly has this game circled on his schedule. He currently leads Centennial in yards rushing, receiving and touchdowns.

Last season, Walker ran for 1,554 yards and 18 touchdowns on 163 carries (9.5 yards a carry). At 5’10”, 205 pounds with breakaway speed he may resemble the man he’s trying to replace, back to backย 2,000 yard rusher Zidane Thomas, but a big game Friday would really help put him on the map.

DE Treven Ma’ae – Bishop Gorman

Five players from Bishop Gorman sit inย the top 11 of 247Sports’ list of top recruitsย from Nevada. Three of them are in the top five, including Ma’ae at No. 3.

Ma’ae has reportedly received more than a dozen offers, most notably from Oklahoma, USC, Nebraska, Oregon and Boise State.

CB Kyu Kelly – Bishop Gorman

The senior defensive back is the No. 4 recruit in Nevada and is one of the top 100 cornerbacks in the 2019 class. Kelly, who had 18 tackles and four interceptions last season, committed to Stanford on June 30.

G Beau Taylor – Bishop Gorman

Taylor anchors the Bishop Gorman offensive line and comes into the season as the No. 5 2019 recruit in Nevada. He committed to UCLA on June 27.

DE Falcon Kaumatule – Bishop Gorman

The newest Utah Ute, and most likely their most intriguing commit. The 6’8″, 245lb athlete has the measurables of an elite recruit with incredible upside. Expect him to play defensive end at Utah but he’ll line up on both sides of the ball and play tight end vs. Centennial.
