Friday Night Football Stirs Up the Soul

We asked three football lifers what they feel on Friday nights during the high school football season. They all shared the same feelings of butterflies and nervous energy.

For Riverdale head coach Willie Brooks the feeling is hard to define. “This is the time of the year that I just feel ooky,” he says. “I’m ready for it to start. I can smell the lights.”

Former Mesa, Arizona QB Mikel Moreno would feel nauseous before every game but remembers how that anxiety would wash away the moment he felt that first hit. After that he was ready – “ready for war” in the words of Louisiana attorney Locke Meredith.
