Friday night September 28th, nationally ranked University High travelled to Zachary High School, home of the Broncos, in a battle between two of Louisiana’s best.
What followed was an intense battle between two talented teams that was highlighted by the standout play of running back Michael Hollins. (Watch all 4 of his scores here)
Zachary struck first when Keilon Brown found Chandler Whitfield on a ten yard strike, the first of two times they would find each other for scores.
U-High answered quickly and emphatically with Gordon McKernan finding Makiya Tongue in stride for the long strike to knot the game at seven.
Then Mike Hollins bullied his way to the end zone for the first time to give the Cubs a 14-7 lead near the end of the first quarter but just moments later, Brown found Whitfield again on for a 65 yard score.
Tied at 14, LSU verbal commit Jaquelin Roy got into the scoring action, powering his way in for a 1 yard touchdown. Once again, the Broncos responded to University’s score with a quick strike of their own as Keilon Brown faked the pitch and ran the ball in on his own for the score to tie the game back up at 21.
Just before the end of the half Mike Hollins found the end zone again as he bulldozed in from two yards out to give University the lead heading into halftime.
After halftime there was more Hollins. A lot more Hollins.
Showing that he has the speed to go along with the power, he took the pitch left and ran 82 yards for his third touchdown of the night to give the Cubs a two touchdown lead.
But Keilon Brown wasn’t content letting Hollins get all the rushing touchdowns in this one as he scampered in for his second score of the game to make it a one score game once again.
But Mike Hollins was just too much for Zachary on this night as he rumbled in for his FOURTH touchdown of the night to make the score 42-27 in the fourth. Later in the fourth McKernan would find Jordan Clark in stride to seal the victory for University High.
U-High improved to 5-0 with the win. Zachary fell to 3-2.
