Finally Squaring Off

Last season, Ferriday and Amite entered the playoffs as the No. 2 and 3 seeds in Class 2A, respectively, aligning the two programs to square off in the state semifinals. But Amite suffered a, 35-32, loss to St. Helena College and Career Academy in the quarterfinals. St. Helena College and Career Academy then went on to upset Ferriday before ending its Cinderella run in the championship against Welsh.

For Amite and Ferriday, the only thing different about this year’s playoffs is Amite came in as the No. 2 seed and Ferriday was the third-seeded team. And both avoided upsets to set up this Friday’s showdown.

Ferriday posted an 8-3 regular-season record and won its first three playoffs games by an average of 28.67 points. Ferriday has won 11 of 12 games since losing the first two contests to begin the year.

Ferriday won its 11th game of the season last week, beating St. Helena College and Career Academy to exact revenge from last season. Just like 2017, St. Helena College and Career Academy earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament.

Including the playoffs, Amrite has gone 15-1. Just like Ferriday, Amrite lost in Week 1 and has gone on a long winning streak (15 straight).

Players to Watch

DT Ishmael Sopsher – Amite

There will be a lot of great players on the field Friday, but Sopsher is special and a name viewers could hear become a star at the next level.

A 5-star recruit, the defensive tackle is the No. 2 ranked player in Louisiana in the 2019 class. He’s also the seventh-best overall recruit in the entire country.

Sopsher has reportedly received offers from nearly two dozen schools, including all the top programs in the country.

OLB Larry Scott – Ferriday

The outside linebacker is probably Ferriday’s biggest playmaker on defense. He will have to play very well for Ferriday to advance to the championship.

Scott is the No. 99 ranked Louisiana player from the 2019 class according to 247Sports.

WR Devonta Lee – Amite

He’s listed as a athlete at 247Sports, but Lee is a dynamic high school receiver. As a 4-star prospect, Lee is the No. 7 ranked Louisiana player in the 2019 class.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds, the wide receiver has received 18 offers, including 11 from SEC schools.

QB Amani Gilmore & WR Kyle Maxwell – Amite

Both of these playmakers are 3-star prospects, and Gilmore is inside the top 50 recruits in Louisiana. The Amite signal committed to Kentucky in September while Maxwell has also received an offer from the Wildcats.

In addition, Maxwell has offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech, Kansas, Tulane, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State.
