2005: Arizona’s Brophy Broncos Square Off Against Hamilton Huskies

The Brophy Broncos and the Hamilton Huskies tee’d it up in this state big school Class 5A division one championship game in 2005.

Hamilton was undefeated coming in, the Huskies had won 19 straight, 39 of the last 40 games and were trying to become the first big school team in over 50 years to win three straight titles under head coach John Wrenn.

Brophy was 12-1 coming into the game, the Broncos were looking to win their first ever state title after finishing as a runner-up twice previously.

Both schools had lost their starting quarterbacks during the season. Hamilton lost starter Brad Gruden in the first game of the year to a knee injury while Brophy dismissed their quarterback for off the field issues. Texas transfer Colby Harris had stepped in for Gruden and done a terrific job all season for Hamilton, while Brophy was forced to start talented sophomore Bryan Berens.
