While there is no action on the basketball courts around the American Athletic Conference, important things are happening. NCAA football and basketball athletes can return to campus for voluntary workouts beginning June 1. Schools are working on the COVID-19 health guidelines for that return – precautions that could include steps such as small groups in weight rooms, closed locker rooms, face coverings for coaches and no high fives.
As COVID-19 ended recruiting visits – and with Wichita State needing to restock its roster – the Shockers basketball staff increased its video work to highlight the program and connect with recruits. Director of player development Nick Jones and video coordinator Jeff Chapman produced highlight clips of former Shockers such as Fred VanVleet, Landry Shamet, Ron Baker and others.
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the plans for many Wichita State athletes. Several seniors will return for a sixth year, one for a seventh, to compete in the outdoor track season that begins in March 2021.
Wichita State coaches and athletes are at their improvisational best during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most Shocker athletes are at home under orders to avoid contact with people. Gyms are closed. Tracks are closed. Their old school – with its hoops, batting cages and barbells – is closed. That sends Shockers to the backyards, parks, woods, garages and basements in search of workout space and equipment.
