For the last year, since McClure’s father opened up Chuck’s Butcher Block Meats in Mesa, the two have spent their time when they’re not on the football field or in school working behind the counter at the meat shop with fellow teammates, senior running back George Ramirez and senior safety Ethan Peterson.

“You come in, choose what you want and we grab it from the case for you,” Edmonds said. “It’s a full-time butcher shop, so you can get any size and any type of cut you want.”

During the uncertainty of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, the group worked at Chuck’s and did what they could to stay in shape, but the back and forth on if they would get to play this season was stressful, McClure said.

“For some kids, this is a way to get to college and if they’re just going to take away the year you’re supposed to break out, it was a tough thing to think about,” McClure said. “These seniors too, Skylar and I are really close with them and we wanted to play one more year with our guys.”

MIND READERS

Edmonds and McClure have a unique relationship as they play the same position, take the same classes and work at Chuck’s together.

The friendship benefits them on the field. They can just give each other a look and point and they know what the other means, Edmonds said.

“Since we spend so much time together, we can kind of tell what’s going through each other’s heads,” McClure said.

When it’s slow at work, Edmonds said the two talk X’s and O’s and look forward to the future.

“We’re brothers,” Edmonds said. “We’re together all the time. On the field we both understand how we play, we both play with intensity and we both love to work hard.”

Last week, both players showed off their hard work in the offseason.

Edmonds was named the player of the game. He had nine tackles, five solo, three tackles for loss and an interception.

McClure had eight tackles and a sack.

“They’re a force to be reckoned with,” Red Mountain head coach Mike Peterson said. “They’re experienced and knowledgeable and savvy. Everything you want in a defensive player.”
