On this special edition 3 part episode of “Movers & Shakers Unlimited” we highlight Comic Book Conventions: San Diego Comic Con. The event started back in 1970 in the basement of the U.S. Grand Hotel, and it has grown to be one of the biggest Comic Con events in the United states and world. Comic Con International: San Diego is non-profit and celebrates the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.
In the first segment, we meet several of the attendees including Brandon Isaacson. He calls his costume “McThor” – a combination of Ronald McDonald and Thor. The costume took over 70 hours to design and create. This is Isaacson’s first San Diego Comic Con and he’s amazed at the huge number of attendees and vendors.
Segment two highlights the vendors of the San Diego Comic Con. Torie Marino, Exhibitor with Suicide Girls, called the event a “crazy, cool experience”. Marino says the size of this particular event is overwhelming and plans to attend future events. Barbara Vantilburg, with Off World Designs, has some good advice for vendors who would like to be part of San Diego Comic Con – demand is high and you will be put on a waiting list. Be patient, attend other events and sell products/services that are unique and not duplicated by other vendors.
In the final segment, Co-Founder Mike Towry explains how the event started back in 1969. All four of the original group who started the event were teenagers and Towry was only 14. At the first year’s event, they had problems finding a location and limited funds. The event was held in 1970 and only 150 attended. For aspiring start-ups, Towry says start small and keep it simple. Get fans together, find a venue and use local talent until you have a budget that can afford bigger named talent.
