Rhode Island’s historic season concluded at the hand of a very physical and talented Quinnipiac squad, 61-50, in the opening round of the Women’s NIT Friday night from the Ryan Center.
With Dayton receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, Rhode Island (22-6) will make a WNIT appearance by way of automatic berth as the second-highest seed in the Atlantic 10.
Rhode Island needs to somehow quickly marshal possession by possession awareness and clean up the poor offense undoing them in A-10 play.
The Rams came out hot and pushed their lead to double-digits on a Makhel Mitchell dunk that made the score 30-20 URI with six minutes remaining in the first half.
Coming into last night's contest URI found themselves firmly planted on the NCAA tournament bubble and many had them as the First Four out to miss this year's big dance.
A bright spot is the play of redshirt sophomore guard Jalen Carey who is exhibiting greater comfort and consistency as the season progresses.
What was at stake?  First place in the Atlantic 10 as URI held a slim edge over Dayton in the the loss column coming into the contest.

A 5-5 sparkplug, Williams is averaging 8.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while shooting .890 from the charity stripe. A pace-changer, Williams exudes passion and purpose in all she does.
