backyard bowl preview

One of the most-highly anticipated high school football matchups of the season across the country is here. Union and Jenks will renew their rivalry in The MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl.

The Ford Game of the Week will broadcast live on Yurview Oklahoma for Cox Communications customers and will also stream live on

Battle of Oklahoma Powerhouses

No two schools have dominated a state like Union and Jenks have in Oklahoma. From 1996-2016, the two programs combined to win every 6A Division 1 state championship. The streak ended last year when Owasso defeated Jenks in the semifinals and then Union in the championship game.

During the 21-year streak, Jenks won 13 of the state titles.

Both programs look ready to contend again in 2018. Jenks has looked impressive and sits at 2-0 heading into this rivalry matchup. After losing in Week 1, Union rebounded with a victory Friday to move to 1-1.

Keith Riggs First Rivalry Game

This edition of The Backyard Bowl will be the first experience for Jenks new coach Keith Riggs. He replaced legendary coach Allan Trimble, who retired at the end of last season.

Trimble coached 21 years at Jenks. He finished with 13 state championships and 231 career wins.

Players to Watch

QB Peyton Thompson – Union

Impressively, Union possesses five of Oklahoma’s top 24 recruits in the 2019 class, and none of them are higher ranked than the team’s signal caller. Thompson has offers from Eastern Michigan and Columbia but has also received interest from a few Power 5 schools such as Arkansas, Missouri and Baylor.

OT Brady Latham – Jenks

Standing at 6-foot-5 and 287 pounds, Latham is the 14th-best 2019 recruit from Oklahoma and a top 130 offensive tackle in the class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

He has reportedly received seven offers, including one from Arkansas.

RB Darius Boone – Union

If stopping Thompson wasn’t enough, the Jenks first-year coach will also have to deal with Boone, who is one of the best running backs in the state. The 247Sports composite rankings consider him the No. 21 recruit in Oklahoma.

Boone committed to Eastern Michigan in June.
