Yukon scored first at the bottom of the fifth inning after Dalton DeBaud hit a double RBI as Caleb Hernandez crossed the plate following a Norman error.
At the to of the seventh inning, Norman was trailing Yukon 1-0 and had two outs against them. Faced with two balls and two strikes, Norman’s Bryson Armstrong hit a double RBI to allow Harvey Cooper to come home and tie the game.
Following two scoreless innings, bases were loaded with two outs as Ole Miss commit Cade Horton hit a double to clear the bases, giving Norman a 4-1 lead at the top of the tenth inning. Moments later, Harvey Cooper hit a single to send Horton home. “He left it down the middle and I wanted to capitalize on it, so I was just sticking to my approach,” said Horton. “I just wanted to give us a chance to score, put it in play basically.”
Yukon attempted to get some momentum going after Chance Shelton hit a single on a Norman error followed by a walk to first from Nollan Koon, but Norman would hold on and end the game 5-1.
Norman head coach Jeff Brewer said about their pitching performance “We really preach pitching and defense and we pitched it well. Sophomore Payne Maga comes in and shuts the door.”
Cade Horton added “Ours guys fought hard all through the game. I think we’re a lot more mentally tough than last year, and that’s why we came out on top in one of these close games.”
