Sand Springs loses a heartbreaker to Choctaw 21-20 in this 9/8/17 matchup.

The Class 6A-II District 1 Choctaw Yellow Jackets (2-0) scored 14 unanswered points in the last 12 minutes of the game as the Class 6A-II District 2 Sand Springs Sandites (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season Friday night, 21-20 at Charles Page High School.

“To be honest with you, if you would have told me in March that’d we be sitting at 2-0 in September, I would have said  ‘absolutely please, yes sir I’ll take it,'” Choctaw’s first-year head coach Jake Corbin said.

The Yellowjackets finished the night with 84 rushing yards and senior quarterback Hudson Woods passed for 221 yards.

Trailing 20-7 heading late into the third quarter, Choctaw mounted a comeback.

Facing 4th-and-six with 14 seconds left in the third, Woods found Gabe Johnson for a 21-yard touchdown.

Woods clinched the lead for the Yellowjackets with a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:37 left to make it 21-20.

“Obviously there were a lot of mistakes tonight, but we’ll take this win no matter what,” Corbin said. “What I am most proud of is you can correct technique and all these other things, but you can’t correct or teach heart and I love the heart of my kids. I am so proud to be their coach.”

Sand Springs quarterback Caden Pennington finished the game with 38 passing yards.

Running back Payton Scott rushed for 256 total yards for the Sandites.

“Look, I told the team that it doesn’t matter if we are 0-3 or 3-0, but as we head into district play, we really need to try and execute a little better,” Corbin said. “I’m not sure we did a great job of executing tonight, but we are talking about intangibles like grit and gut and these kids really are taking ownership of their positions and when you have that it makes you really happy.”

Choctaw will open up district play as they are set to host the Putnam City North Panthers (1-1) in their home opener Friday, September 15.
