Wichita State started the game with a 16-2 run and never looked back against Rice, delivering a 90-61 win Sunday at Charles Koch Arena.
Erik Stevenson scored 21 points off the bench to lead all scorers. Markis McDuffie, Jamie Echenique and Dexter Dennis also scored in double figures.
The Shockers finished with 21 assists to just 10 for Rice, and also turned the ball over nine fewer times.
Wichita State (3-3) lost two of three in the Charleston Classic, and played much better after a full week off.
Rice (3-4) cut a 28-point lead to 17, getting within 71-54 with 6:28 left. Marshall called a rare timeout with a big lead in the second half to get onto his team about its defense, and the Shockers responded.
“The first half we were very good, especially early, defensively,” coach Gregg Marshall said after the game. “The second half, we weren’t very good defensively. I thought we were playing slow. We’re trying to become a better half-court defensive team. It’s a struggle.”
Wichita State next hosts Baylor on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
