High Five Fridays Start the Day Off Right in East Providence

The unprecedented coronavirus pandemic continues to keep us apart and change the way we live. Some students are attending school wearing masks and staying six feet apart from their classmates, while others are distance learning from home.

Everyone looks forward to the days that students can be together and high five each other – just like they did in East Providence every Friday morning prior to Covid-19..

Doug Borden, a popular, outgoing resource officer in East Providence, created High Five Fridays to bring a smile to East Providence students – both young and old.

Each Friday East Providence High School student athletes and band members traveled to one of the town’s elementary schools and greeted the elementary school children with high fives, music and smiles.

With an atmosphere similar to a pep rally, High Five Fridays put a smile on the faces of the pint size elementary school children as they came off the bus and headed into school to wrap up the school week. The weekly event  also proved to be equally beneficial for the East Providence High School student-athletes who participated. High Five Fridays became a vehicle for high school athletes to give back to the community. The positive, uplifting program  showed the EPHS athletes that they have a stake in the community and can make a difference.
