Catholic B.R. Advances Past Brother Martin in Division 1

Brother Martin is no stranger to fighting back in the fourth. It’s part of how they remained undefeated in this crazy football season.

But turnover timing made a big difference in this one, just one part of a saga where Catholic advances past Brother Martin to play for another LHSAA state title.

Watch the full-game replay

If you’re just comparing QB production, Brother Martin would have taken the night. Experienced junior Garrett Mmahat was 14/21 for 316 yards and 3 touchdowns. Catholic’s new guy Daniel Beale accounted for himself well at 10/16 for 201 yards as well as 3 touchdowns, showing the poise that his coach says makes him a player to watch.

But it was the Bears’ skilled players in every position that brought them the victory. Even so, it was a close game from the outset and the stats tell that story.

Both Catholic’s Shelton Sampson Jr. and the Crusaders’ Austin Jackson IV came away with three touchdowns on the night. Sampson had a fourth TD called back on a holding penalty.

Brother Martin’s Jaylon Spears carried the ball 21 times for 96 yards and a touchdown. But George Hart III was right there with him with 16 carries for 125 yards and a score of his own.

Fortunately for the Bears, they have a defense that will not quit. They made the plays that made the difference in this game, capitalizing on turnovers and converting them to touchdowns.

Catholic coach Gabe Fertitta said,”These guys brought their guts today,” in a glowing review of his entire team’s effort.

Catholic B.R. Advances Past Brother Martin 49-31 and moves on to face C.E. Byrd.
