If you are expecting your first child, or even if you’re like Ashley and you are a first time parent- chances are, you aren’t well-versed in child seat safety. So, what do you do? Ashley called upon the help of Patricia. When the two couldn’t figure out her seat, they enlisted the help of their local fire station!
Since kids are returning to school, making sure your children are safe when they’re in your vehicle is of utmost priority!
We welcome John Paulson, a litigation attorney for Huffman & Huffman Brothers-in-Law, P.L.L.C. to share important information when it comes to child safety seats and the law.
Mr. Paulson explained the laws in Virginia:
- A child must be rear-facing until they are at least 2 years old
- Children must be in a car seat, in the back seat, until they are 8 years old
He then elaborated a little more, saying that the CDC actually recommends that children stay in a safety seat in the back seat until the age of 12.
John also recommends using sources on the internet to find the best car seat for your little ones. (The NHTSA and Safe Kids Worldwide are both great resources!)
Since back to school also means kids are walking to bus stops and using cross walks more frequently, John also implores drivers to stop texting, stop looking at your phone, don’t play with your radio. It is drivers’ responsibility to keep the children safe.
