Senior running back Steveland Williams rushed for two touchdowns in the second half to lift No. 6 McDonogh 35 past No. 30 Baker 19-8 in the LHSAA Class 3A quarterfinals.
Baker led 8-6 at halftime.
Williams also hauled in an interception.
McDonogh 35 quarterback Manuel Armstrong connected with Renwick Doyle for an 18-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
McDonogh 35 coach Wayne Reese praised the effort of Baker, the first team ranked No. 30 or higher since 2003 to qualify for the quarterfinals.
“The 30th seed? I think something was wrong with the computer,” Reese said to The Advocate. “That’s not a good team … That’s a great team. They’re explosive, and they can score from anywhere on the field. We knew they’d fight until the end.”
