Showdown for Trip to Class 4A State Championship Game

Edna Karr is very familiar with this position. The Cougars have played in the Class 4A state championship game in nine of the last ten years and they are looking for their seventh straight trip to the title game under head coach Brice Brown.

A stretch of four straight championships ended last year when Carencro defeated the Cougars 35-19. The coaches and players say they are trying to reclaim the championship.

For Westgate, they’ve never played in a state championship game and the Tigers have not advanced to the semifinals since 2010 when they reached the 5A semis and lost to West Monroe 34-3.

They were a 24-seed that season and this year they are a 5-seed and loaded with talent at the skill positions.

Players to Watch: Westgate Tigers

Jordan Doucet has been the Tigers quarterback for most of the season, and he’s thrown for 1,504 yards and 15 touchdowns, and only 4 interceptions. Doucet is also a one-thousand-yard rusher and has scored 14 times on the ground as he possesses 4.4 speed.

Steven Antoine is a big back, who has rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and has six touchdowns.

Doucet has some terrific targets to throw to including big tight end Danny Lewis, who is committed to Cincinnati. Lewis has 38 catches for 694 yards and five touchdowns.
Amaaz Eugene also has 38 catches and he’s found the end zone eight times, while Dedrick Latulas has caught 29 passes for 591 yards and nine touchdowns.

Brennon Landry started the season at quarterback for the Tigers but injured his shoulder. He’s expected to get a few snaps on Friday night as he’s thrown for 676 yards and eight touchdowns.

Westgate’s defense has been solid all season long. It’s led by 5-star junior safety Derek Williams, who has offers from LSU and Alabama. He’s a big hitter, with excellent size and speed.

Three-year starting linebacker Zyion Madison is a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine. Defensive end Bradley Lewis can get after the passer and also plays well against the run.

The Westgate defense will have its hands full with top-seeded Karr, who has outscored its three playoff opponents 129-22.

Players to Watch: Edna Karr Cougars

The Cougars are led on offense by junior quarterback AJ Samuel, who started last year’s 4A championship game as a sophomore and wants to put together a better performance this time.

Samual has plenty of talented offensive weapons at his disposal. He has an absolute stud at wide receiver. Aaron Anderson is committed to Alabama. Yarun McMath has great size and speed. Running back Jaylin Lucas is committed to Tulane. He’s a transfer from Terrebonne High School who came to Karr after Hurricane Ida. He’s very difficult to tackle because he’s shifty and speedy for a smaller back.

On defense, Karr features several college prospects. Defensive lineman Tygee Hill is committed to LSU and has been playing since his freshman season. Linebacker Tory Morgan has several offers, while cornerback Ryan Robinson Jr. is a four-star prospect in the Class of 2023.

Karr has also been in the return game as Lucas and Anderson have returned several kicks for a touchdown. Lucas returned a punt for a touchdown in the 33-7 quarterfinal win over Carver.

In that game, the defense also scored two touchdowns as Skylon Jean-Louis intercepted a pass and returned it for 50 yards for a touchdown. Keyron Ross returned an interception 55 yards for a score.

So, we are looking forward to an interesting matchup on Friday night. Can Karr continue its dominance in 4A before they move up to 5A next season or can Westgate continue its special season? Find out Friday night on GameTime.
