Wichita State got a strong 5 innings from starting pitcher Ryan Stuempfig in an 8-5 win against Kansas State on Wednesday.
Stuempfig, a freshman, allowed just 1 earned run and gave up 4 hits. The Shockers built a 7-1 lead on the strength of an RBI double by Luke Ritter and a towering home run to deep right field by Garrett Kocis in the second.
Kansas State got to within 7-5 in the top of the eighth inning. But Ross Cadena walked in the bottom half of the inning, and then scored an insurance run by advancing on three different wild pitches. Then the Wildcats failed to score in the top of the ninth.
Wichita State (13-12) has now won six of seven, including home wins against Kansas and Kansas State. The Shockers host Bethune-Cookman in a three-game series starting Friday.
