No. 1 Helix rallied from down 14 at the half to defeat host No. 5 Steele Canyon 35-23 and secure the Grossmont Hills League championship.
Per The San Diego Union-Tribune, Helix is now 48-2 in league play during the last decade.
“We were very fortunate to win this game,” Helix coach Robbie Owens said to The San Diego Union-Tribune. “This was big. When you’re at Helix, we want to be the No. 1 seed every year.”
Helix sophomore tailback Christian Washington scored three of his four touchdowns in the second half and amassed 218 yards rushing on 29 carries.
“We came out with a different mindset in the second half,” Washington said to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Helix improves to 9-1 overall and finishes 5-1 in league play. Steele Canyon falls to 9-1 and ends league play with a 4-1 record.
