Wichita State (6-4) relied on bench scoring and a second-half surge to put away Grambling State (1-6).
The Shockers won 70-61, breaking open a 31-31 halftime tie to go up 15 early in the fourth quarter.
Jaida Hampton and Carla Bremaud, who keyed that run, combined for 28 points and 11 rebounds. Shyia Smith, who scored a career-high 17 points against Creighton, added 15 and 8 off the bench.
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage and Seraphine Bastin both appeared to leave the game due to injuries.
Grambling State’s Shakyla Hill led all scorers with 20 points in a near triple-double, but also contributed five turnovers to her team’s 26 and went 0-5 from the 3-point line.
Wichita State next plays Northwestern on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. CT as part of the “Duel in the Desert” tournament in Las Vegas. The Shockers will play either Kansas or Washington State the next day.
