Rumble in the Big Easy: Warren Easton faces Landry-Walker in a Crescent City Clash

This Friday’s GameTime on YurView Louisiana matchup highlights two New Orleans teams with a ton of talent as the 5A champion Landry-Walker Chargin’ Bucs host Warren Easton. The Fighting Eagles are ranked 2nd in the Class 4A Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll.

Warren Easton has been impressive in 2017. Beating Jesuit 40-14 and then blanking Brother Martin 29-0. It’s been a tough go for Landry-Walker. They lost a hard fought game in the season opener to John Curtis and then fell to the defending 4A champion Edna Karr Cougars.

Landry-Walker was 0-2 last season and went on to win 13 in a row, including a 5A title. But the Bucs miss last year’s Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance Mr. Football award winner Keytaon Thompson, who is now at Mississippi State.

Devonta Jason
Devonta Jason

Ja’quan Dorsey and Tony Cargo have been rotating at quarterback and neither guy has been able to establish himself as ‘the guy.’

While the passing game is a work in process, running back Chad Alexander is emerging as one of the top running backs in the Crescent City. The junior had 208 total yards in a season opening loss to Curtis.

And you can’t forget about five-star wide receiver Devonta “Whop” Jason, who had a highlight film one-handed touchdown catch in the Curtis defeat, seen on GameTime Yurview.

There are no question marks, only exclamation points when it comes Warren Easton QB Lance Legendre, who is quickly moving up the recruiting boards as a junior. He accounted for five touchdowns in the season opening win over Jesuit and had three TD passes against Brother Martin last week.

He has a talented group of wide receivers. Damien Tate, who mostly plays on defense, and provides a spark on offense as well. The McNeese State commitment already has four touchdowns.

Yo’Heinz Tyler

Yo’Heinz Tyler and Sheldon “Sticks” Jones are coming off a season where they combined to catch 82 passes for 1,203 yards. Tyler had a 45-yard touchdown catch last week and Jones is on a mission to show he can play for a big-time college.

The Eagles also have three quality running backs. Starter Larry Barabino is a consistent runner and blocker. Sophomore Ashaad Clayton already has SEC schools looking at him. And Dewitt Johnson has also turned some heads over the last few weeks.

Warren Easton will go up against a defense that has played well in two losses. The Bucs have several outstanding defensive backs. Nickel back Corione Harris is an LSU recruit and a Kansas commit. Safety Tajwuan Francis is a physical safety. Tyren Fielder had two sacks last week and Josh Smith is a three-star commitment on the defensive line.

Damien Tate

Warren Easton has allowed just two touchdowns this season. Tate is a fearless defensive back, who had four interceptions last season. Cornerback Chester Kimbrough has offers from SEC and Power 5 schools.

Then on the defensive line its Jeffrey “Bubble Gum” Holmes, who is 6-2 and at least 320 pounds. But he can move for his size and caught a two-point conversion last week.

A win Friday for Landry-Walker can turn its season around. A victory for Warren Easton and it’s another building block to a possible championship season.
