Ford Game of the Week: Midwest City vs. Bixby Football (Replay)

The Bixby Spartans and the Midwest City Bombers met at Allan Trimble Stadium in Jenks, Oklahoma. The winner of Friday night’s game advances to the 6A Division II state championship game in two weeks.

Midwest City got the scoring started in the first quarter. Preston Colbert fired a 64 yard bomb to Oshei Whiteside that put Midwest City up 7-0. Bixby drove the field and settled for a 24 yard field goal from Vernon Reis. It was 7-3 Midwest City after a quarter.

In the second quarter a 42 yard pass from Colbert to Brian Wilson set up a 2 yard touchdown run by Billy Cooks III. The Bombers led 14-3. A couple of possessions later Bixby’s Mason Williams found Clayton Barbour on a 61 yard pass play that set up a 1 yard touchdown run by Cade Cavender. Cavender intercepted a Midwest City pass in the end zone just before halftime that left the first half score Midwest City 14, Bixby 10.

In the 3rd quarter Bixby scored on a 13 yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Cade Cavender. Bixby had their first lead 17-14.

In the fourth quarter Midwest City got the lead back when Preston Colbert connected with Jerome Brown on a 12 yard pass. Midwest City led 21-17. But Bixby and Cade Cavender had something left and Cavender’s 3 yard touchdown run with 6:44 left put Bixby back on top 24-21.

A third down sack at the 4:51 mark forced Midwest City to punt and Bixby was able to run out the clock and take the 24-21 victory.

Bixby advances to the 6A Division II state championship in two weeks. They will play Stillwater who defeated Tulsa’s Booker T. Washington High School 38-28.

The Player of the game in the Bixby-Midwest City 6A Division II semifinal is Bixby’s Cade Cavender.  Cavender scored three touchdowns 2 were rushing touchdowns and the other was a pass reception.  He also had an important interception in the end zone that ended a Midwest City scoring threat late in the first half.

The Play of the Midwest City-Bixby game came with five minutes left in the game.  Midwest City needed a third down conversion to keep a drive alive and their hopes for victory.  But the Bixby defense swarmed Midwest City’s Preston Colbert for a sack.  Midwest City punted and Bixby ran out the clock.
